The New Zealand government has introduced a new regime under the Financial Sector Amendment Act 2021 that makes climate-related disclosures mandatory and effective for the financial year starting on or after 1st January 2023. The Act establishes a framework for mandatory climate-related disclosures for climate reporting entities (CREs), and failure to comply may lead to serious consequences. It is critical for CREs to stay abreast of the evolving regulations and ensure they are compliant to avoid these penalties.

As the first country in the world to mandate financial organisations climate-related disclosures, the FSC is working closely with New Zealand regulators to develop robust regulations and with members to develop climate-related scenarios.
